About
Dr. Carola Westermeier
I am a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) in Cologne. My group focusses on the intersections of technology and sovereignty.
Before my current position, I was a fellow at the Institute of Sociology, TU Darmstadt as ZEVEDI Young Investigator. Prior to that, I worked as lecturer and senior researcher (Akademische Rätin) at Justus Liebig University Giessen. I have also held a visiting professorship (Professurvertretung) in International Relations and International Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt. As postdoctoral researcher, I contributed to the FOLLOW project, supported by a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam.
I currently also co-lead a research project on Financial Infrastructures and Geoeconomic Security at the Collaborative Research Centre 138 Dynamics of Security. Previously, I also led a research project on Money as Data.
My research is based on the intersections of economic sociology, international political economy, and (critical) security studies. My empirical focus lies on financial technologies and (data) infrastructures.
