About
Prof. Dr. Carola Westermeier
I am Professor of Economic Sociology at Philipps University Marburg. I also lead the research group on ‘Technology and Sovereignty’ at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) in Cologne, supported by the Lise-Meitner-Excellence Programme.
Before my current position, I was a fellow at the Institute of Sociology, TU Darmstadt as ZEVEDI Young Investigator. Prior to that, I worked as lecturer and senior researcher (Akademische Rätin) at Justus Liebig University Giessen. I have also held a visiting professorship (Professurvertretung) in International Relations and International Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt. As postdoctoral researcher, I contributed to the FOLLOW project, supported by a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam.
I was co-lead of a research project on Financial Infrastructures and Geoeconomic Security at the Collaborative Research Centre 138 Dynamics of Security. Previously, I led a research project on Money as Data. I also serve as editor at the journal Finance and Society.
My research is based on the intersections of economic sociology, international political economy, and (critical) security studies. My empirical focus lies on financial technologies and (data) infrastructures.
